At first glance, a home inspector and an End User Computing (EUC) benchmarking expert seem to have very little in common. One spends time evaluating foundations, roofs, electrical systems, and plumbing. The other follows the EUC Score methodology to analyze digital workplaces, virtual desktop performance, application experience, and productivity metrics. Yet when you look beyond the surface, their roles are remarkably similar.
Both professionals are hired to answer the same fundamental questions: How healthy is this environment, what risks might be hidden beneath the surface, and how well-suited is the (virtual) asset for various use cases? In both cases, the value lies in seeing what others cannot. Homeowners may not notice subtle signs of water damage hidden behind a wall. Likewise, IT leaders may not realize that employees are losing hours of productivity each week due to underpowered virtual desktops, unsuitable remoting protocol settings, or unexpected network constraints. The symptoms may be visible, but the underlying causes often require a trained eye, structured assessment methods, and objective benchmarks.
The comparison becomes even more striking when we think about moving into a new virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in the same way as moving into a new apartment or office building. On the surface, everything may look ready: the rooms are clean, the lights turn on, and the keys are in your hand. But before signing the lease or rental agreement, a careful tenant wants to know whether the plumbing works, whether the heating is reliable, and whether hidden issues will create frustration later. Instead of inspecting walls and wiring, they assess EUC hosting platforms, virtual machine specifications, remoting protocol charcteristics, application performance under different network conditions, the impact of add-on tools, and the overall digital employee experience. Whether the asset is a house, an apartment, or a virtual desktop, the principle remains the same: inspect before you commit, measure before you assume, and identify problems before they become costly.
Neither profession relies solely on experience and intuition. Both home inspectors and EUC benchmarking experts depend on highly specialized tools to uncover evidence that would otherwise remain hidden.
